Body Condition Score (BCS) Explained

The Body Condition Score is a system used to evaluate your dog's body composition. The scale typically ranges from 1 to 9, with 5 being the ideal weight.

Score Description
1 Very Thin: Ribs, spine, and hip bones easily visible. No palpable fat. Obvious waist and abdominal tuck.
3 Thin: Ribs easily palpable with minimal fat covering. Waist easily observable. Abdominal tuck evident.
5 Ideal: Ribs palpable without excess fat covering. Waist observed behind ribs when viewed from above. Abdomen tucked up when viewed from side.
7 Heavy: Ribs palpable with difficulty, heavy fat cover. Noticeable fat deposits over lumbar area and base of tail. Waist absent or barely visible.
9 Obese: Ribs not palpable under very heavy fat cover. Massive fat deposits over lumbar area and base of tail. No waist. Obvious abdominal distension.

Using the correct BCS helps determine the appropriate feeding recommendation for your dog. If you're unsure about your dog's score, consult with your veterinarian.
